Mike Pyle has promised to render John Hathaway ‘irrelevant’ when he fights the British welterweight at UFC 120.

Hathaway leapt to stardom at UFC 114 with a dominant victory over Diego Sanchez, and now he is set for his first main-card appearance at London’s O2 Arena. As a top class wrestler with rapidly improving striking, there are no clear holes to attack in the Hathaway game – which has constructed a 14-0 record to date.

However, Pyle brings top level jiu-jitsu to the Octagon, winning 17 of 20 career victories via submission, and he has years of experience over Hathaway. “Quicksand” has shared the ring with the likes of Rampage Jackson and Shonie Carter, and he remains the only man to have made Jon Fitch tap, and he doesn’t envisage any problems beating Hathaway.

John Hathaway’s impressive defeat of Diego Sanchez in La Vegas two months ago has earned the Sussex mixed martial artist another step up in class when he fights next at the 02 Arena, London, on October 16, against veteran Mike Pyle.
It had been widely reported, speculatively, that Hathaway would be facing Dong Hyun Kim in the first UFC event in the UK for eleven months.
It could be a contest to relish for the former rugby union academy player, still only 22. Hathaway admitted after his all-round performance against Sanchez that he was content to return to the gym to have six months preparation before entering the Octagon again. Pyle will prove to be another examination. Win it, and Hathaway, undefeated in four fights in the UFC, is truly beginning to make strides.
Pyle’s first professional mixed martial arts bout was in 1999 against future UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson. It was also Jackson’s pro MMA debut, Rampage outweighing Pyle by over two stones. Jackson won on decision.

Fast-rising welterweight star John Hathaway returns to the octagon against Dong Hyun Kim in a matchup of unbeatens.

The 22-year-old Hathaway has surged towards the front of the UFC’s 170-pound division with four straight wins, including a breakthrough win in a dominant decision over Diego Sanchez during May’s UFC 114. He’s 14-0 overall.

Kim (13-0-1, 1 no contest) has four wins and one no contest in his UFC run, also earning a victory at UFC 114 with a decision against former Ultimate Fighter winner Amir Sadollah.

Interesting quandry for Hathaway

There is no denying, therefore, that Hathaway’s win over Sanchez puts him in rarefied company. The question, however, is whether he should be rushed into a bout against one of the division’s monsters or if his management should pull back the reigns a little and develop the 22-year-old star in the making a little more methodically.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on perspective, Hathaway is cutting his teeth in the sport’s biggest and most competitive mixed martial arts promotion. There are no tune-up fights in the UFC. Losses are witnessed by millions and read about by millions more. So there is nowhere to hide.

I’m not sure what I would do if I managed the rising prospect. Maybe UFC matchmaker extraordinaire Joe Silva will look to test him against another top veteran like Mike Swick, Dan Hardy or maybe even the loser of the expected rematch between Fitch and Alves. Whatever the case, my guess is that this kid will become a mainstay on the main cards for the foreseeable future.
